Fundamentals of Quantum Electrodynamics
in Terms of Field Strengths

A new approach to quantum electrodynamics, mainly developed by the authors, is presented. The model is constructed without making use of potentials. The electromagnetic field strengths are used as the basic quantities and the variational variables. In contrast to conventional QED, where inevitably the indefinite metric is used, the theory under consideration allows to exploit the standard Hilbert space with positive defined metric and contains some wider symmetries and additional conservation laws. A generalization of the Noether theorem for non-Lie symmetries is considered, a set of different s-equivalent Lagrange functions in terms of the field-strength tensor is proposed. New symmetries and conserved quantities for the original Maxwell and Dirac equations are found. Starting from the Dirac - Maxwell morphism, the connection between the symmetries of the Dirac and Maxwell equations are investigated and the conservation laws for the electromagnetic field are derived from those of the spinor field. The cannonical quantization of electromagnetic field strengths is performed and axiomatic approach to QED is formulated in the definite metric just as in conventional Wightman approach. Other attempts of non-standard formulation of QED are reviewed. An appendix containing different formulae, constructions and identities, being useful in dealing with the electromagnetic field-strength tensor, is included.

Experimental and theoretical studies of electron impact excitation of metastable atomic levels are reviewed. A survey of experimental techniques and methods of calculation is given. Some Fundamental Physical Processes Accompanying the Inelastic Electron-Atom Collisions

The most important principles and the relevant experimental devices and methods are described for the compreherisive investigations of the low-energy (0-30 eV) elastic and inelastic electron-atom collisions. We enclosed and described (section II.) only those devices which are available (and in operation even now) at least in one of the institutions represented by the authors. The more detailed (in section III.) fundamental processes are: the threshold effect, the production and autodetachment of short living (typically 10-13 s -10-15 s) negative-ion resonances, the interference between the processes of direct excitation of an atomic level and its excitation via an indermediate negative-ion state, the processes leading to the population of atomic metastable states and the post-collision interaction (PCI). Apart from the general theoretical background we discuss the above mentioned processes by presentation - exclusively - only of our own experimental results.

On the basis of these departments and owing to a large group of researchers from the Uzhgorod State University (the Chair of Quantum Electronics), the Uzhgorod Branch of the Institute for Nuclear Research, Ukr. Acad. Sci. was established in 1981 being the predecessor of IEP. Thus, the index is a retrospective informational reference book presenting the papers published during that period. The present book is an attempt to overview some last experimental and theoretical results based on these new developments and concerning integral cross sections of electron scattering by complex atoms. The review does not include the scattering by hydrogen and elium atoms as the simple objects discussed in many publications. The presented results are based mainly on the calculations carried out by the authors during two last decades. This defines the scope of the book, where more detailed consideration is given to the electron excitation of atoms and ions of the first and second groups of the Periodic table. The systematic calculations for excitation of few-electron multi- charged ions are also presented. These data can be widely used in the plasma applications. Where it is possible, we give a detailed comparison between the theory and experiment, with the indication of a whole range of available experimental data for given atom. Much attention is paid to the computational aspects of scattering observables and to the analysis of the accuracy of different theoretical methods. In this connection, several computer codes are scrutinized, with indication of their advantages and shortcomings.

Understanding of the physics of low-energy electronic and atomic collisions is important for description of a very broad variety of phenomena including processes in gas discharges and fusion plasmas, atmospheric physics, environmentalremediation and radiation damage. Metastable states of atoms and molecules play a special role in these processes. They also present great interest from the point of view of fundamental mbox{physics}.In particular, studies of their lifetimes allow us to probe relatively weak interactions, like spin-orbit interaction, in atoms and molecules. One of the efficient ways for obtaining metastable states is excitation of atoms or molecules by electron impact. This is the major topic covered by the present book. The first two chapters have an introductory character. The authors discuss properties of excited states in general and metastable states in particular in terms of the basic concepts of quantum- mechanical description of atoms and molecules. Then they review experimental methods for obtaining metastable states in electron-atom collisions, atom-atom and ion-atom collisions, and the methods of their detection. The second chapter also reviews theoretical approaches to description of formation of metastable states by electron impact. In summary, this is a quite complete review of variety of experimental and theoretical techniques. Chapter 3 contains a review of experimental and theoretical results on electron-impact excitation of metastable states of atoms and molecules. Where possible, the authors compare experimental and theoretical results and estimate their quality. It is very valuable to have a lot of information, which is spread among numerous journal articles, collected in one chapter. Whereas Chapter 3 gives more general information on cross sections and their dependence on energy Chapter 4 concentrates on negative-ion resonances which appear as peaks in the energy dependence of excitation cross sections. Studies of resonances allow us to obtain information about subtle effects in atomic and molecular systems, like electron correlations and spin-orbit interaction. Chapter 5 reviews original results obtained by the method developed by the authors. It measures the current of metastable atoms as a function of the deflection angle due to collisions with electrons. This method allows the authors to obtain differential cross section by converting observed cross sections into the center-of-mass frame. This is important since differential cross sections plotted as functions of angle and collision energy carry detailed information about the collisional dynamics. Whereas Chapters 3-5 discuss production of metastable states, Chapter 6 concentrates on description of collisions involving metastable atoms: excitation and ionization from metastable states, excitation transfer and ionization of atoms and molecules by atoms in metastable states. The last chapter has more applied character. The authors discuss the role of metastable atoms and molecules in astrophysical and laboratory plasmas. In summary, the book presents a comprehensive review of numerous phenomena involving production and detection of metastable states, and atomic pocesseses involving metastable states. The authors are world-known experts in this field, and this makes the book really unique: every researcher studying collision processes involving metastable states should read it.
